Could applying for a job put you at risk for fraud?

With the academic year over, many graduates are eagerly entering the workforce for the first time. While this may be an exciting time, it can also be dangerous as criminals are looking to take advantage of the naivety of fresh graduates.

When job hunting in Manila, make sure you are not falling prey to the employment scam.

What is the employment scam?

Fraudsters impersonate recruiters online, posting about potential jobs on social media and job hunting platforms. When an interested applicant finds their posting, they send in their resume, which contains sensitive information including their first name, email address, and mobile number.

These fake recruiters then go along with the recruitment process, inviting the candidate for a supposed interview.

Once the interview has been concluded, the fake recruiter may pose issues about the position, such as many candidates vying for the position or trouble with the credentials. In order to secure the position, the candidate needs to pay a “bond” to the “company.”

Whether out of naivety or desperation, some first-time applicants go along with paying the bond thinking it will help them secure the job they want. However, after paying said bond, the recruiter either ceases to reply or they find out that the recruiter was never a part of the company they applied to.

Job hunting tips for new graduates

If you are a fresh graduate, you are eager to start the next chapter of their life and land your first job. Stay safe while doing so with these tips.

Do not submit financial information

If the recruiter asks you to submit things, such as your bank account number or credit card information, this is a red flag. Never disclose your bank details to anyone. This could be a way for others to steal your identity and commit fraud. Once employed, your employer may ask for your bank account number so they can deposit your salary directly into your bank account. Never disclose it prior to employment.

Do not pay upfront

There should be no reason for you to pay any amount of money during the interview process. If a recruiter is asking you to pay a certain fee or bond during the interview, it may not be a legitimate interview. Unless you are interviewing through a placement company, you should not be paying for anything.

Do not meet in private

Always think of your safety when going for interviews. Make sure your interviews are conducted in a public space. Do not push through with any interviews conducted outside of the company’s office or in a private location.

Landing your first job should be a happy time in your life. Keep these tips in mind and you should be all set.
