Banking and managing your money has never been easier. With more ATMs located throughout the Philippines and online banking apps making it faster and more convenient to do transactions, people can perform tasks like withdrawing or transferring money any time of the day.
But these conveniences come with the risks of scammers and fraud. Thieves are finding more creative ways to take your money or sensitive information.
Whether you’re using an ATM or internet to access your bank account, follow these tips to do your banking transactions safely.
When using an ATM
When using any ATM, be sure to practice the following safety measures:
Withdraw in a safe location- Observe your surroundings and make sure no one suspicious is waiting nearby. If you are withdrawing at night, avoid ATMs in dark or poorly-lit areas. As much as possible, withdraw large amounts in the morning when there are more witnesses and some bank security patrolling the area.
Inspect the machine- Some scammers use skimming devices to copy your ATM Personal Identification Number (PIN) and card data so they can create a duplicate and withdraw your money using a new card. To avoid this, inspect the number pad, card slot, and other parts of the machine for any loose attachments. If there are signs that the machine has been tampered with, do not use it.
Do not count your money in front of the ATM- For thieves watching ATMs, a person counting money that just came out from an ATM is a sign that that person just successfully withdrew a large amount. Once the machine has dispensed your money, place it immediately in your bag and count it in a more secure place. If there is a discrepancy, you can always call your bank later.
Never ask strangers for help- If you encounter a problem with your transaction, do not ask the person next in line to help you. Cancel your transaction and seek assistance inside the bank branch. If the bank is closed or unavailable, cancel the transaction and contact your bank’s hotline immediately.
When using online banking apps
When you need to use your mobile banking app to transfer money, pay your bills, view your account balance, or making any other transaction, follow these safety tips.
Enable two-factor authentication- Some may find it inconvenient to wait for a text or code, but providing a safety layer like this reduces the risk of thieves getting into your account if they get hold of your password.
Do not access banking apps with public Wi-Fi- Anyone has access to public Wi-Fi offered in malls and restaurants, so the risk of hacking, spying, and malware on your smartphone increases considerably when you use public Wi-Fi. As much as possible, only use your online banking apps at home with your private Wi-Fi or your personal mobile data.
Enable banking alerts- Banking alerts inform you whenever someone withdraws from your account. So, if someone has hacked into your account or stole your data and used it to make a purchase, you can immediately contact your bank.
Be wary of fake communications- If you receive a call, text, or email from someone claiming to be from your bank, do not give away personal information like your OTP, birthday, mother’s maiden name, etc. When in doubt, contact your bank’s official number and verify if the call or message is legitimate.
These days, it’s important to be alert and aware so that you can protect your bank information and money. These steps can help you avoid falling victim to common scams and tricks so that your hard-earned money stays safe.
